Amazon removes Death to the IDF T-shirt

Amazon has removed from sale a t-shirt with the slogan “Death Death to the IDF” following a letter from UK Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI).

The T shirt, which echoed the slogan that the performer Bob Vylan claimed to have invented at Glastonbury, included an image of a skull wearing a military helmet emblazoned with an Israeli flag.

UKLFI pointed out that the t-shirt was potentially illegal, if worn in public, and also breached Amazon’s own terms.

Anyone wearing a T shirt with the slogan “Death, Death to the IDF” in public could be in breach of Section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986 which prohibits the  display of threatening or abusive writing within the sight of people likely to be alarmed or distressed thereby.

They could also breach Section 18 Public Order Act 1986 which prohibits the display of threatening, abusive or insulting written material likely to stir up racial hatred.

Amazon’s sale of the t shirt would also breach its controversial products guidelines which prohibit the sale of products that promote, incite, or glorify hatred, violence, racial, sexual, or religious intolerance.

A spokesperson for UKLFI commented: “We are pleased that Amazon acted swiftly and removed this offensive item”.
