Pots of Sabra Hummus in Waitrose have been defaced with stickers which said “Boycott this Brand – Funds Zionist Apartheid”
When this anti-Israel activity, which took place in Waitrose Oxford Street, was reported to UKLFI, we wrote to Waitrose to point out that anyone interfering with one of their displayed products on display, with the intention of causing economic loss is likely to be guilty of a criminal offence under s38 of the Public Order Act 1986, which has a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment.
The intention could be economic loss to Sabra Hummus – if the goods are shunned by the members of the public, as a result of the sticker campaign – or to Waitrose, if they lose money as a result of the campaign, or have to pay the cost of extra security staff to guard the Israeli products from harm.
UKLFI has requested that Waitrose’s staff should be extremely vigilant so they can try to prevent future interference with Israeli products and that they should take immediate action against similar anti-Israel activity.
Caroline Turner, director of UKLFI commented: “Since the Israeli hummus is the best, it is unlikely that many people would be put off buying it by this sticker. However, it is a worry that the hummus may have been contaminated by the protestors. Waitrose must do all they can to ensure that the hummus is kept safe from the anti-Israel protestors.”
