UKLFI: Supporting Israel with legal skills

Tower Hamlets Jews leaving the borough amid “culture of fear and intimidation”

Since UKLFI’s letter to Tower Hamlets about their failure to remove Palestinian flags and inflammatory stickers from council property, we have been inundated with messages from local residents.

Many residents who contacted UKLFI had already raised concerns directly with the council about the Palestinian flags and stickers. But they said their complaints have been either brushed aside by the council or just ignored altogether.

Some residents told us how they have been made to feel frightened and incredibly isolated by the council’s stance.

Jonathan Turner, chief executive of UKLFI, said: “The council’s failure to remove Palestinian flags and inflammatory stickers has contributed to a culture of fear and intimidation for the borough’s Jewish residents.

“We have heard from residents who are deeply concerned about the council’s stance  yet are too scared to make a complaint for fear of retribution.

“One Jewish family told us they already send their children to school outside the borough because they do not feel they can guarantee their safety in Tower Hamlets. The family feel that such is the hostile environment for Jews in the borough, they have now  decided to move out of the borough completely.

“Other residents told us they feel too scared to complain to the council as they worry they will become a target for attacks. This is a very worrying state of affairs”.

It comes after UKLFI wrote to the Metropolitan Police to report that Tower Hamlets council is “guilty of multiple criminal offences” after refusing to remove Palestinian flags and “Victory to the Intifada” stickers from council property.

Lutfur Rahman, the disgraced politician who was barred from public office for five years after being found to have engaged in corrupt and illlgal practises, made a comeback last year as mayor of the East London borough.

Tower Hamlets, which has the largest proportion of Muslim residents out of all local authorities in England, has failed to take down a deluge of “inflammatory” pro-Palestinian stickers.

Tower Hamlets council has also declined to take down a “proliferation” of large Palestinian flags from lamp posts, following pleas from anxious Jewish residents.

UKLFI has written to the Metropolitan Police, pointing out that the council and mayor’s refusal to act constitutes a criminal offence.
